You do not need a paid Adobe subscription to use CanterCanvas presets on your phone. The free Lightroom Mobile app is enough for the basic workflow: import a preset, apply it to your photo, and adjust the result to suit your image. The presets themselves are paid digital products delivered after purchase.
This beginner-friendly guide explains how to install and use presets on iPhone and Android, even if you have little or no photo-editing experience.
What you need before you begin
- an iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or Android tablet
- the free Adobe Lightroom app
- your downloaded CanterCanvas preset files
- a photo you would like to edit
Download Lightroom directly from the official app store for your device:
The app is free to download. Adobe also offers paid Premium features, but you do not need a paid subscription to import and apply ordinary presets or make basic adjustments.
Which preset file should you use?
Depending on the set, your download may contain several file formats:
- XMP: for current Lightroom versions, Lightroom Mobile, and Photoshop Camera Raw
- DNG: an alternative mobile installation method, especially for older workflows
- LRTemplate: for older desktop versions of Lightroom
For the current Lightroom Mobile app, XMP is usually the simplest option. If your download arrives as a ZIP file, extract it first so Lightroom can access the preset files inside.
How to import XMP presets into Lightroom Mobile
- Download your preset set to your phone or tablet after purchase.
- Extract the ZIP file in your device's Files app.
- Open Lightroom and select any photo.
- Open the Presets panel at the bottom of the editing screen.
- Open the three-dot menu and choose Import Presets.
- Select the XMP files from your download folder.
- After import, find them under Yours or User Presets.
The wording may vary slightly between app versions and operating systems. Adobe's current instructions are available in the official Lightroom Mobile preset guide.
How to apply a preset to your photo
- Open your photo in Lightroom.
- Tap Presets.
- Open your CanterCanvas preset group.
- Tap a preset to preview the look.
- Confirm your choice with the check mark.
- Adjust exposure, white balance, and contrast if needed.
A preset is a creative starting point, not a fixed filter. Light, camera settings, coat colour, skin tone, and shooting conditions differ from one photo to another. Small adjustments often create the most natural result.
Why does the preset look different on my photo?
That is completely normal. A preset applies a coordinated colour and contrast treatment, but it cannot know the light in your original image. A shaded portrait needs different corrections from a photo taken in direct sun.
Check these controls first:
- Exposure: makes the entire image brighter or darker
- White Balance: corrects an image that looks too warm, cool, green, or magenta
- Highlights: restores detail in bright areas
- Shadows: reveals detail in darker areas
- Contrast: changes the depth and overall intensity of the image
For black dogs, dark horses, white fur, or strong backlight, adjusting Exposure and Highlights is especially useful.
Do the presets work in Photoshop?
Yes. XMP presets can also be used in Adobe Camera Raw, which is part of Photoshop. You are therefore not limited to Lightroom. LRTemplate files are intended for older Lightroom versions, while DNG files are useful as an alternative mobile method.
Do you need a computer?
No. You can complete the mobile workflow on your phone: download the files, import the presets, edit your photos, and export the finished images. A computer is only necessary if you prefer Lightroom Desktop or Photoshop Camera Raw.
Tips for natural-looking edits
- Adjust Exposure and White Balance before changing many individual controls.
- Keep fur texture, eyes, and skin tones natural.
- Reduce the strength of your changes when colours look too intense.
- Try two or three presets from the same set in difficult light.
- Compare the edit with the original before exporting.

Which preset suits your photo?
Different looks work well for horse, pet, nature, outdoor, travel, and lifestyle photography. Some sets keep greens especially natural, while others create warmer, earthier, or more cinematic colour moods. Browse All Presets to compare our current sets and bundles.

Frequently asked questions
Are CanterCanvas presets free?
No. The preset sets are paid digital products. However, you do not need a paid Adobe subscription to use them with the basic workflow in the free Lightroom Mobile app.
Does installation work on both iPhone and Android?
Yes. On both systems, you can download and extract preset files and import them into Lightroom Mobile. Menu names may differ slightly.
Can I reuse a preset after importing it?
Yes. Once imported, presets remain in your Presets panel and can be applied to as many of your own photos as you like.
What should I do if Lightroom cannot find the files?
First check that the ZIP file has been fully extracted. Then import the XMP files inside it and make sure your Lightroom app is up to date.
Can I change the result after applying a preset?
Absolutely. Exposure, White Balance, Contrast, and the other available controls remain editable. These small adjustments are how you make the look fit your individual photo.
